Tania started in machine knitting at Sheridan College.  She trained dealerships and at seminars on knitting machines for Singer Co.  After that she taught small groups  and produced knits.   Her main pleasure is on the creative side – selecting colours,  figuring out textures, experimenting and playing with fibre,  and in understanding the technical side of whatever craft is being done.   

Over the years of parenting three kids she volunteered at their school teaching various crafts: sewing, machine knitting, scrapbooking, rug hooking.   Liking to learn new things, courses were taken on jewellery making, tole painting,  hat making, burlap back rug hooking, sandal and shoe making...  you name it!   

Tania is not a traditional hand knitter or crocheter; she chooses to be experimental with her methods when working manually with textiles.  That being said, knitting frames gave her an opportunity to use knitting machine techniques much more slowly but quietly  in a very thick knitting.  That’s what got her into cutting her own yarn with polar fleece.  She has great fun experimenting on the circular and flat frames making hats and rectangular carpets.The next step was to just use her fingers to create the stitches or loops  and that’s when the improv carpets started to be made.  She thinks they are a mix of crochet, knitting, weaving... minus the tools.  All that is necessary are fabric scissors,  polar fleece, and your fingers.   It’s a great way to recycle old blankets, scarves, pajamas, house coats, t-shirts – basically anything that is a very fine and tight knit that does not fray when cut. The notion of recycling  and reducing the cost of your crafting can be very appealing!   She will bring materials and many samples to show the fun process of experimentation and you will be able to make a mini carpet to try some of the techniques.
